From Earth To the Universe
The night sky, both beautiful and mysterious, has been the subject of campfire stories, ancient myths and awe for as long as there have been people. A desire to comprehend the universe may well be humanity’s oldest shared intellectual experience. Yet only recently have we truly begun to grasp our place in the immensity of the cosmos. Learn about this journey of celestial discovery, from the theories of the ancient Greek astronomers to today’s grandest telescopes, on this tour of the solar system and beyond.
Back to the Moon for Good
After the Space Race of the 1960s, interest in the Moon quickly waned. The Google Lunar X Prize is hoping to change that, reinvigorating interest in Moon exploration and colonisation. This time, however, it's different. A $30 million dollar prize is being offered to all citizens of the world, not governmental space corporations, for achieving a successful Moon mission. The initiative is designed to instil a new generation with the wonders and importance of space travel and exploration. The criteria for winning the prize will involve landing a module on the surface, travelling at least 500 metres, and returning HD images and videos back to Earth.
Established in 2007, the mission deadline was extended to December 2017, with three teams in contention in 2016: SpaceIL, Moon Express and Synergy Moon. An award-winning, 24-minute fulldome planetarium show, "Back to the Moon for Good", chronicles these teams' efforts as they compete for the coveted prize. Such films will be played in the upcoming ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre, which opened in spring 2018 in Munich, Germany.
